Information on Applying for a Visa
The procedure for applying for a study visa for Germany may vary slightly from country to country. We strongly recommend checking with the German embassy or consulate in your country for up-to-date details relevant to your specific case.
Plan these steps towards your study visa for Germany:
- Find the German Embassy/Consulate responsible for your student visa application.
- Visit the website of the Embassy/Consulate, go to "National Visa"/"Long Term Visa" section, click on the "student visa" category and familiarize yourself with all of the requirements
- Book a visa appointment
- Submit the required documents. On your appointment day, take all of the documents to the embassy/consulate and submit them
- Pay the visa fee
- Go through the interview process
- Wait for the response (approval or rejection)
The standard processing time for a German study visa is 2-3 months. In some countries, even booking a visa appointment can take months. Do not wait until you receive your admission letter.
Try to book an appointment at the embassy/consulate directly after you apply for the study programme. Most embassies require upload of the admission letter only one week before the actual visa appointment. With some embassies you are asked to indicate the university name during visa registration already. But this can be changed later on when uploading the admission letter.
We recommend to register with the embassy already in Okt/Nov for a visa appointment in December.
